Westmorland and Furness Council Local Plan
Planning Authorities are required by law to have up-to-date Local Plans. These are essential planning documents which set out local planning policies for now, and the future.
Westmorland and Furness Council has concluded a Scoping Consultation with its communities and stakeholders. This is the start of the process to create a new Local Plan. It wishes to involve as many people as possible to enable it to deliver a Local Plan that is fair to everyone and which helps to make Westmorland and Furness a great place to live, work and thrive.
Please see the Information Poster and Quick Guide to the Local Plan process.

Community Survey on Proposed Development of 54 homes - off Greengate.

On Tuesday 13 January 2026, Alderley Homes held a public consultation event in The Village Hall in Levens on their proposals for the construction of approximately 54 dwellings with access off Greengate.
Many members of the Levens community attended and it became clear to members of the Parish Council that there are significant concerns within the community about this proposal. The Parish Council itself has previously expressed concerns to the Planning Authority in relation to the ability of the village infrastructure to cope with new, large scale developments. It had highlighted specific issues including water pressure and sewage problems, vehicular access to and within the village, the lack of public transport services and the capacity of the village school to accommodate increased numbers.
Following the Alderley Homes consultation, Parishioners voiced their concerns about this proposed development including poor access via Greengate, the lack of safe pedestrian routes in the village and affordable options within the proposed estate.
Levens Parish council has not yet come to a conclusion or expressed an opinion on the proposed developmen, but if and when a planning application is submitted, the Council will be a Statutory Consultee and its response needs to be informed by reliable public opinion. To ensure that it can properly reflect that opinion, it has launched a public survey asking for views on the proposal (see the notice opposite). To accompany this, the Parish Council has put together a special newsletter to provide information for the benefit of its Parishioners. Follow the link below:

Could These Fields Be Built On? W&F Maps Now Live
Several sites in and around Levens have been suggested for future development as part of a new 20-year Local Plan from Westmorland & Furness Council.
These are early-stage proposals and nothing has been decided yet. A public consultation is expected in the autumn.
Westmorland & Furness Council (W&F) is drawing up a new Local Plan to guide development across the area for the next 20 years — and several sites in and around Levens have now been suggested for future building.
These sites have been submitted by developers and landowners in response to what’s known as a ‘Call for Sites’. The interactive maps showing all these suggestions were published in May and are now available for anyone to view:

View the interactive map of suggested sites
To be clear, none of these sites have been chosen yet. This is just stage one: the Council is now reviewing what’s been submitted to see which plots are realistic candidates for development. Some may be ruled out due to things like protected status or lack of access.
Once that list is narrowed down, a full public consultation will follow — likely in the autumn. The Parish Council has confirmed it will take an active role in that process, and villagers will have a chance to comment before anything is decided.
This is an early but important stage in shaping how Levens might change in the years ahead — so if you’re curious, take a look at the maps and keep an eye out for the consultation later in the year.
